Asbestos products belong to one of two classes: “friable” and “non-friable”. The first consists of materials that can be easily crumbled by hand. The second type refers to materials that are much more durable in nature as they are held together with cement, vinyl or asphalt. Prior to removing friable asbestos material, a state permit is often required.
Asbestos can be commonly found in the following applications:
• Vinyl flooring tile
• Acoustical ceiling tile
• Insulation surrounding boilers and related steam piping
• Drywall joint filling compound
• Sprayed on fireproofing on steel structures such as beams, columns, trusses, joist and steel pan floors. It was also used as a decorative finish and acoustical insulation on ceilings.
• Window glazing
• Coatings for roof cement and caulking materials.
• Gaskets for boiler, furnace and kiln doors and openings, high pressure steam lines and packing for pumps and valves.
